About World Peacemakers:

In 1978 Gordon Cosby--pastor of Church of the Saviour and co-founder of World Peacemakers--preached, "One thing history confirms: the nation that trusts in anything other than God is abandoned by God... We feel that the danger of extinction is held back by 9,500 missiles. They are not holding anything back. God in his mercy is holding it back. The missiles are the vials of God's wrath waiting to be overturned. We'd be safer without them."

And so World Peacemakers set out to promote understanding of what true security means and how to obtain it. First we published A Time to Stop by Richard Barnet. "Humankind," he wrote, "is entering a period of unique opportunity and unprecedented danger." He was speaking of the extraordinary danger of the arms race and the chance to create instead a world community of caring interdependence.

By June of that year we had distributed 40,000 copies and had joined the rapidly growing anti-nuclear movement. Later, along with Fellowship of Reconciliation and with the New Call to Peacemaking and with Pax Christi-USA and with Sojourners, we made a covenant: "In the name of God let us abolish nuclear weapons."
